I have just purchased an Ipod Nano (2GB) ... I was VERY set on not buying Apple's products, mainly because they're more proprietary than than anyone else on the planet ... but, that "Best Buy" giftcard I received for Xmas helped me knock the price down to where I figured I'd just give it away if it sucked. It's most certainly living up to "sucking" status -- gotta install iTunes, Quicktime, iPhoto, iThis or iThat just to get the freaking thing working (as of writing this, I still don't have it working). Doesn't seem I can just copy/paste music into the damn thing -- I have to use the software ... this is just silly. Damn you Apple, damn you to hell!
It does look nice and is small (why I got it -- iRiver charges too much for 512mb devices ...) ... I wanted something I could use at the gym, and Apple has filled a nice market niche -- but this setup deal sucks ...

I hated iTunes for the first month after switching from Winamp. With Winamp I had complete control of everything - the files, the ID3 tags and the playlists.
iTunes is about giving up that control. I don't need to synchronize my ID3 tags with their file names and I don't have to organize my music folders by hand. Once I gave in and let iTunes manage everything, I really started to love it!
Well, iTunes by itself might be ok, but you have no freedom -- what if I go to my friend's house and want to add some music to my device -- I'd have to install iTunes on his computer just to add music to my iPod -- which is stupid. With my old Creative device, I just drag/drop, and leave ... plus, I'm told once you put your music into iTunes, you can only play it in iTunes -- I might want to dump my music from my iPod onto my work computer, but now I have to install iTunes, and then muck with everything -- I just want it organized by folder, and then start my Windows Media Player -- I don't need some giant app killing my processor while I program ... Apple is worse than Microsoft now IMHO ...
